Our unique Vinopic Score

Every wine we sell is outstanding because it has been approved and scored for how superb it tastes and how well-made it is (two key areas of wine quality). This is carried out by two highly respected wine experts.

First, our Master of Wine, Rosemary George, tastes and rates every single wine. If, and only if, she approves, our scientist and wine expert, Roger Corder, then analyses and rates the wine to see how well-made it is.

Their ratings add up to our Vinopic Score. The higher this unique Score, the better the wine!

Vinopic Wines is the only wine retailer to take such an in-depth and rigorous approach to selecting the best wines to sell.

The team behind the company

We started Vinopic Wines because we felt there was too much guesswork in having to choose from such a large selection of wines available today and with so much variation in quality.

How can you compare wines without turning to price? How can you judge quality without detailed research into the wine? How do you really know exactly what’s inside a bottle? How can you be sure you'll choose a wine guaranteed to impress?

It can be hard to see beyond a wall of wine labels these days. We wanted a more reliable and objective way of identifying wines that taste special and are well-made.

Wine quality is key for the entire Vinopic Wines team. Santiago (Chief Executive) and Lorenzo (COO), from Malta and Italy, share a Mediterranean passion for life and a love of the very best food and wines. For them, dinner simply isn’t dinner if not accompanied by an excellent glass of wine with family and friends! They will happily spend hours discussing with wine experts Rosemary and Roger what to consider for Vinopic Wines’ catalogue.

The results from Rosemary’s systematic tasting and Roger’s scientific analyses add up to a Vinopic Score. This unique Score helps you discover and choose, with confidence and ease, wines you will want to enjoy with family and friends.

The carefully hand-picked selection of grapes with stringent organic controls, respecting the terroir, ensures that Fontodi's wines are a world apart from many of its competitors in terms of quality.
This wine is made from Sangiovese, a grape variety finding its truest expression in the Chianti region of Tuscany. In many ways Sangiovese is to Chianti what Cabernet Sauvignon is to Bordeaux.

What to enjoy it with

Think to the local dishes of Tuscany, Florence and the beautiful surroundings. This wine is best enjoyed with dishes with tomato based sauces and also pasta with such sauces.

The typical bistecca alla fiorentina or Italian-style T-bone steak on the grill with parmesan and rocket goes perfectly with this wine. This would also be an ideal wine for venison. Finally, olive oil and dishes rich in great olive oil make for an ideal match.

Rosemary's Taste Review

Fontodi is one of my favourite Chianti estates and this is everything that good Chianti should be. It is the entry-level normale wine, rather than the more structured riserva, or single vineyard cru, so it has the lovely accessible palate of fresh sour cherry fruit, which is the hallmark of fine Sangiovese. The vineyards of Fontodi lie outside the village of Panzano, which is one of the key villages of Chianti Classico, in the hills between Florence and Siena.

Meet Giovanni

Giovanni
Giovanni Manetti and his cousin, Marco, have come together to make high quality wines in keeping with the Italian winemaking tradition. They believe in drying their grapes for a specific period of time before they are crushed, which allows the wine to achieve a rich and distinctive character as it ages.

While the Fontodi estate has only been associated with the Manetti family since 1968, the family's name has been connected for hundreds of years with the famous "terrecote" tiles of the Chianti region.

Grape growing

Their 70 hectares of vineyard, planted at a density of 6,000 vines per hectare, are situated in the prime 'conca d'oro' (golden shell) of Panzano, and over the past six years these have been converted to organic viticulture. Giovanni is now following biodynamic principles to obtain the best quality fruit.

The south facing vineyards and their natural amphitheatre shape allows the grapes to ripen fully. The soil here allows for excellent drainage and encourages the vines to put down deep roots. The quality of the Sangiovese grapes from the Fontodi vineyards obviates the need for Merlot or other varieties as a remedial blender.

2007 was characterised by a hot summer, with occasional rainfall at the right time, encouraging the grapes and tannins to ripen well and slowly.

Winemaking

Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for 2 weeks during which time the cap was punched down twice a day.

The wine was then racked into 225 litre French oak barriques (Troncais and Allier) where it remained for 12 months before bottling. The wine was matured in bottle for 6 months before release.

The 2005 Reserva is proving to be an age-worthy wine which more than surpasses the producer's reputation for exceptional quality at a modest price. It is a great introduction to the wonders of Spanish fine wine.
Bodegas PradoRey is also well known for its enormous estate - 3,000 hectares in total - which was once a 16th-century farm and hunting area for royal families.

Medium colour; lightly smoky nose, with rounded fruit on the palate. Supple oak, elegant and harmonious. This was a discovery for me, from one of the most exciting red wine regions of Spain. The principal grape variety is Tempranillo, tempered with a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Would be delicious with barbecued lamb.

Meet Ángel Luis

Ángel Luis
Ángel Luis Margüello González is the chief winemaker of PradoRey. Coming from a family of enologists, he has unsurprisingly developed a deep understanding of wine and winemaking techniques.

He holds a Masters' Degree in Viticulture, Oenology and Wine Marketing. He has been part of the royal Site of Ventosilla since 1997, where he is currently the technical director. He describes the estate's wines as "very personal and modern".

Deep dense colour; Ripe fruit and oak on the nose. This is a powerful full-bodied mouthful of fruit and oak; it is rounded and ripe, with balancing tannins, and plenty of character, and just the thing for a large steak. Argentine Malbec and good beef is one of those perfect combinations.

Meet Attilio and Alberto

Attilio and Alberto
Attilio and Alberto, two Tuscan natives, are the makers of this exceptional wine. Attilio has become a specialist with wines using the Sangiovese and Malbec grape varieties, while Alberto is an international wine consultant.

Attilio's positive energy and the marathon spirit of Alberto are the dual driving forces behind the succes of this estate and its hunger for continued development.

Grape growing

The grapes are hand picked in high density vineyards located in La Consulta and Vista Flores in the Uco Valley; and Vistalba, Perdriel and Las Compuertas in Luján de Cuyo. The yield was 7 tonnes per hectare or 14.5 hectolitres per acre.

The winter was mild, with a dry and cool spring, and a wet month of March. Harvest was delayed after the cooler temperatures earlier in the year, and it was carried out in a very cool and dry environment, leading to aromatic wines with bright and openly expressive fruit.

Winemaking

The hand picked grapes went through a double sorting table and were gently crushed before going into small, short, stainless steel tanks to begin the fermentation which was done by native yeasts; pigeage, or punching down the cap, was used to maximize the extractions of colour and flavour from the skins.

The fermentation lasted 10 days, with a further 20 days of extended maceration, where the temperature was kept around 28-30°C to gain depth and volume in the mouth. After pressing the wine was put into barrels (only tight-grain French oak) for the malolactic fermentation and 16 months of ageing to integrate the oak and wine. The wine was then bottled unfined.

The winery's modern approach to winemaking is reflected by the attractive modernity in the style of this wine and by the progressive stainless steel premises that have recently been built in the town of Haro.

This estate is also home to some of the oldest vines of the Graciano grape in Spain. Graciano is one of Rioja's rarest grape varieties and an iconic feature of this winery.

Meet Basilio

Basilio
Basilio is regarded as one of Spain's most accomplished winemakers. He has held the position of Chief Winemaker of CVNE and Contino for over thirty years and created some of Rioja's most memorable wines. His goal is truly inspiring - to dig deep into the lost secrets of the Rioja winemaking tradition and pair them with innovative winemaking techniques.

Basilio is a legend in Rioja and a true ambassador for Rioja's winemaking techniques. In addition to his work for CVNE, he is also now the winemaker and owner of his namesake winery, where he applies his thirty years of passion and knowledge to continue developing high calbire wines.

Rains were moderate, yet stable during the whole winter and through the month of May, also with moderate temperatures that advanced the growth cycle 10 days over the precious year. Spring and summer were particularly dry with temperatures higher than the average of the previous years. September started with milder temperatures, which allowed for excellent phenolic maturation of the grapes. Harvest in our vineyards started in mid September and lasted until the end of October. The health of the grapes was optimal in general terms.

Winemaking

This wine is produced from selected plots of the Contino Estate. The grapes are de-stalked and fermented in 16,000 L stainless steel vats at a temperature of 28-30ºC with a maceration time of 15-20 days prior to entering into the malolactic fermentation and then being transferred into a mixture of French and American oak barrels, where the wine will rest for two years. Once the wine is bottled, it will rest a further year in bottle prior to being released.

The vineyard was, in fact, founded by an Englishman, Joseph Gilbert in 1847. Gilbert, a true pioneer, is seen by many as laying the foundations for the Australian winemaking industry that we know today.
Despite its long and illustrious history, Pewsey Vale has also shown itself to be an innovator by being the first winery to bottle its wines under the now widespread screw cap.

Light colour; quite a powerful, mineral nose, with a firm slatey palate. Dry and mineral, with a hint of honey on the finish. Eden Valley is one of the best places for Riesling and this is a lovely example.

Meet Louisa

Louisa
Louisa’s great achievements in wine were confirmed in 2008 when she received an internationally recognised award for the contribution for the development and promotion of Riesling, one of the many accolades she has received for her winemaking over the years

She is very passionate about the Eden Valley region and about Riesling and believes the most exciting aspect of this noble variety is the diverse range of styles of wine which it can produce. Louisa is not only an iconic winemaker in Australia but also an international wine judge.

The vineyard covers a total area of 145 hectares (with 50 hectares under vines) of gently undulating hills, nestled close to Pewsey Vale Peak, to the west of the town of Eden Valley. Pewsey Vale is nearly 500 metres above sea level. The inherent quality of the vineyard is a reflection of this altitude and the low fertility of the grey sandy loam soils which prolongs ripening into the cool autumn season. This long ripening period develops unique, consistent flavor profiles.

After a dry winter and spring, the vines got off to a good growing start and set well balanced crops. The heat wave in January, while not ideal was preveraison (the grapes were small and as hard as bullets) and caused few problems. The weather after this, in February, March and into April was cool with particularly cool nights - absolutely perfect for slow ripening, accumulation of flavours and retention of natural acid. Each individual block of grapes was picked at optimum ripeness - exhibiting the classic ripe flavours of Pewsey Vale and Eden Valley, and gorgeous natural acid freshness.
