The historic vineyards
In its efforts to create authentic wines that express a sense of place, Clos Lapeyre recently converted to organic methods of farming meaning that sulphur compounds and plant extracts have replaced weed killers.
Although Clos Lapeyre's first vintage was produced by current winemaker Jean-Bernard Larrieu as recently as 1985, the vineyard where the grapes are grown has, in fact, been owned by his family since 1920.

The vineyards of Jurançon are close to the town of Pau and lie in the foothills of the Pyrénées. The principal grape varieties are Gros and Petit Manseng, and you might also find some Gros and Petit Courbu. Petit Manseng is best for the sweet wines of Jurançon, while the dry wines are made predominantly from Gros Manseng.

However Jurançon Sec is never firmly dry. This wine keeps you guessing. There is a hint of orange on the nose and some dry honey on the palate, as well as some good acidity and some pithy lemony notes. Altogether very intriguing.

This wine from the foothills of the Pyrénées is made from 100% Gros Manseng, an important grape variety in the Jurançon area. The fermentation was in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature, with micro-oxygenation of the lees at the end of fermentation to increase the aromas.

The wine is a good example of what the Gros Manseng grape variety has to offer compared to more international varieties. It is greenish-gold in colour, tangy, with aromatic hints of apple and citrus, with sweet aromas of honey or marzipan, and a pleasant minerality on the finish.

Meet Jean-Bernard

Jean-Bernard
Prior to acheiveing his dream of becoming a winemaker, Jean-Bernard Larrieu studied viticulture and oenology. In 1985 having completed his studies, he constructed a small cellar with the help of his father... and with this, Clos Lapeyre was born.

Jean-Bernard lives very close to the estate with his wife and two daughters and makes a point of speaking to them only in the local dialect. A poet himself, he was the one to introduce a walking tour through the vineyards of the area, an enjoyable tour which takes its route from a local poetry book.

Grape growing

Jurançon is in the foothills of the Pyrénées about 40km from the Spanish border. The nearest town of note is Pau. Clos Lapeyre is situated in the commune of Chapelle de Rousse with the vineyards at an altitude above 500m. The area is renowned for food, rugby, folk songs and a rich culture and history.

Vineyards: High diversity of sands, silts, limestone and clay form a variety of terroirs as well as galets (pudding stones) which help the ripening by reflecting the heat of the sun back onto the vines. Jurançon has a long growing season from May to October with dry mild autumns. Viticulture at this estate is organic.

The wine is produced in stainless steel; no oak has been used in the making of this wine! The wine was kept on the lees during the winemaking process.

The "Cuvée Charles de Batz" is the top cuvée of the estate, named after the original name for the Musketeer D'Artagnan. Having received many awards, it is no exaggeration to say that this wine is the flagship of modern Madiran.
The grapes of this wine came from very old vines, 40-100 years old. This is a wine not to be missed by any passionate wine lover.

Rosemary's Taste Review

This is the top cuvée of a leading Madiran producer, Domaine Berthoumieu. It has a deep young colour, with some rich smoky oak on the nose, which repeats on the palate. The grape variety mix is Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon. Tannat is the principal grape variety of Madiran, and as you might expect from the name, it produces wines with a firm tannic character, which benefits from blending with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon to soften and fill out the flavours. It is aged in oak for eighteen months, including twelve months in new oak, and you can certainly taste oak on the palate.

The wine is still very young and will benefit from some more bottle ageing, or could be enjoyed with a substantial meat dish, think daube, confit de canard or roast beef. The name of the cuvée begs the question, who was Charles de Batz. Quite simply the model for one of the characters in Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Three Musketeers. His full name was Charles Ogier de Batz de Castelmore, Comte d’Artagnan and he served under Louis XIV and was killed at the siege of Maastricht in 1673. The musketeers came from Gascony and Madiran is the red principal red wine of the region.

Meet Didier

Didier
Didier Barré is one of the most talented winemakers in the Madiran region. Working with the Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Pinenc grapes, he has managed to create some of the region's most idiosyncratic wines.

Being a traditionalist by nature, he is one of the few winemakers in the region not to use micro-oxygenation to soften his wines, preferring instead to rely on traditional methods.

Location: South West France just below Bas Armagnac.

Grape: Tannat, a very tannic grape, is the great red grape of Gascony and Béarn, yielding long-lived wines of great concentration.

Oak barrels
Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand, de-stemmed, crushed and put into the fermentation vats. The fermentation lasts between 21 and 25 days depending on the variety and the fermenting must is pumped over the cap everyday.

The wines undergo normal malolactic fermentation. For the ageing, the different base wines are racked and blended in the spring and then aged in cement tanks and 2 to 4 years old oak barrels are used. The wine is aged for 22 months before bottling.

Pyrenean lamb is a classic combination. A hearty Cassoulet or slow cooked belly of pork would also serve as would some of the local hard cheeses from southwest France. Worth decanting into a carafe before drinking.

Irouleguy is one of the most original wines of south west France, made principally from Tannat, with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. However, the Tannat has quite a different expression from Madiran.

With Irouléguy, you have a more mountainous wine, from the foothills of the Pyrenees. The colour is deep; there is spice on the nose, with some berry fruit and peppery acidity on the palate. Quite intriguing and very original, and just the thing if you want to go off the beaten track.

This is a land of great history; legend has it that the mountains rose from the blow of a club by a giant in a terrible rage. A sainted knight, Loup, gave his name to the mountain, after becoming a hermit, due to the loss of his great love.
The blend of this wine is quite fascinating, as it includes Roussane, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and Chardonnay.

This a delicate, yet interesting and complex wine, and somewhat of rebel as it does not follow appellation rules, because the blend includes grape varieties that are not allowed in the appellations of the Languedoc. The grapes: Roussane 40%, Viognier 20%, Sauvignon Blanc 20%, Sauvignon Gris 10%, and Chardonnay 10%.

The harvest season in 2010 was humid and cool. The Chardonnay and Viognier grapes were pressed immediately after harvesting, the Roussane and Sauvignon had 24 h maceration before pressing to increase fruit flavours. Fermentation was 3 to 4 weeks. The wine has delicately floral aromas, and you can taste white blossom or floral notes (possibly honeysuckle), with hints of dried fruit (apricots) and almonds. It is very much a wine to be sipped and carefully savoured!

Meet Jean

Jean
Orliac is a real innovator in the Pic St Loup area and his estate is representative of his nature. Quite a free spirit himself, this wine of the estate is also a rebel, as it partly consists of varieties that are not allowed in the appellations of Languedoc.

After completing his Agricultural Engineering degree, he was inspired by the land around the Montagne de l' Hortus, while rock climbing in the area.

This is the most northerly of the Coteaux du Languedoc region, where the vines grow in pebbly, limestone and clay soil amidst the beautiful open countryside of the garrigues. The discrepancy between the hot daytime and cool night time temperatures in summer and autumn is favourable for wine production.

Vineyard: Brown alluvial soils on coarse alluvial deposits or on chalky-marly rock at 120m altitude.

Climate: Mediterranean type climate with hot days but cool nights which help to maintain the acidity. Chardonnay and Viognier are harvested earliest.

Yields: 30 hectolitres per hectare.

Winemaking

The Sauvignon Blanc is given a cold maceration for 24 hours, the Chardonnay and Viognier are given a direct pressing. The juice is cold settled and fermentation is temperature controlled in stainless steel for eight weeks.

Saint Mont monastery
In the Middles Ages, the Benedictine monks of the Saint-Mont monastery were patiently developing their winemaking techniques and this heritage has travelled through the centuries to this wine.
In 1979 the cellars of Plaisance, Aignan and Saint-Mont joined forces. Their initials created a very highly respected group of caves; the Plaimont Producers.

Meet Plaimont producers

Plaimont producers
Plaimont producers is a team of women and men, who put all their love and passion for wine and nature into this dynamic group. Their constant concern is to achieve harmony and create sustainable development. The main difference of this admirable group is the fact that they do not position themselves only as an economic group, but also a social one.

In the words of Laurent Fortin, Director General of Plaimont Producers:

"Here, man is the center of the device. We are all striving towards the same goal: to support our members as well as possible, preserving our landscapes and the activity of our beautiful South West to perpetuate the legacy of our predecessors."

All of the plots in the south west have their own book production, which regulates the size drastically, tillage, pest control, and auditing. The group decides the optimal time got the harvest date with technological analysis of an advanced series of acids, phenolic maturity, the sugar content and available nitrogen.

The whole harvest is made by hand and the white grapes are collected in the very early morning to preserve their freshness and express their aromatic subtlety. In August, each parcel is classified by an expert commission and represents 50% of the final grade.

The rest is determined by a quality objective assessment of the harvested grapes.

Barrel tasting
Winemaking

The personality of red wines is developing during very long maceration periods with very gentle extractions. The typicity of the wines is marked with the aging in barrels. The quality of the drums is an essential point for the winemaking process, the cellar master selects only French barrels of Allier, Vosges or even the forest of Fontainebleau.

The style of Plaimont Producteurs' wines is marked by the freshness with a natural tension and nervousness.

In the red wines, power and unrivaled complexity are the main characteristics.
